Just yesterday, February 10th, Adam McKay’s online comedy channel, Funny or Die, released a 50 minute “made for TV” spoof movie that covers Donald Trump’s book ‘The Art of the Deal’. The film takes place in the 80’s and adopts the film style of the time. It follows Johnny Depp as Donald Trump as he rises through the ranks of the rich. The movie can be viewed for free their website: funnyordie.com. Funny or Die nailed it with this video, by spending a little more money on the acting and obtaining Johnny Depp, they have created a great piece of owned media. It’s hard to make a film with a celebrity actor these days and not have it be all over the news before the release of the movie. By keeping this film a secret and using a topic that is very relevant, they were able to make the movie viral overnight (quite literally). The video exploded, sites quickly wrote articles and people quickly shared it on social media, gaining a plethora of earned media. If you don’t know what Funny or Die is by now, I have a feeling that you soon will.
